    INR change with weight change

Question on Warfarin and INR. Do you find that one can slowly build a tolerance to Warfarin and must increase dosage over time to maintain INR? Or does it take awhile for one to adapt and stabilize? I'm almost at the one year mark and find that recently I've had to increase overall weekly...

Mechanical vs Tissue - need help deciding

Yep. Exactly what happened to me. Big Corporate Downsizing the year before my unexpected valve replacement surgery. Had great inexpensive highly subsidized insurance that I used once in my lifetime. Luckily my wife was employed, but by a very small Company with small subsidy and high premiums...

Mechanical vs Tissue - need help deciding

Ahh, I just love the use of averages. We used to use a simple example in planning: You have one hand in boiling water and the other hand is in freezing water, but on average you are warm. The ACA average numbers shown above are way off from reality. The employer sponsored ones are much closer...

Mechanical vs Tissue - need help deciding

Hello – I am a US citizen and agree more with Pellicle’s view on our system. I’m guessing that you most likely have a good job with good insurance, and probably have had such, your entire working life. Before that, your parents took care of your needs. When you have top tier insurance especially...

    Tissue Valve

Great choice. Good luck with your recovery. Every day gets better.

    Coumadin clinic

Good plan. That's what I did from the start. 1mg tabs give you the most flexibility. Don't know why they would hesitate switching to all 1mg tablets. Demand it!

    cuts on warfarin

Nice ride, thanks. I like the countryside aspect. I've taken similar MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) courses here. Same fear too but of hitting a American Whitetail Deer. I have some nice rides on video thru the small mountains of West Virginia. Real nice curvy roads. I'll have to figure out...

    cuts on warfarin

Dentists can prescribe special ointments to help stop bleeding and heal quicker. I'd also suggest frequent use of antiseptic mouthwash to kill the germs and help prevent infection.

    cuts on warfarin

Was that a Yamaha TTR125? And you on it? Good fun. Suggestion; get a helmet!

    cuts on warfarin

Great to hear! That reminded me that I also had several drinks later in the evening, after getting multiple cuts earlier. Damn lucky to have survived! Ha. Just normal living. Really no adjustments. Enjoy.

    cuts on warfarin

I was working on my truck yesterday doing regular maintenance and installed a auxiliary transmission cooler. Lots of sharp places. During the process I received cuts on my hands in multiple places. Happy to report that I did not bleed to death and that it was very similar to cuts prior to...

    Tissue Valve

Yes, and it surprised me that one does not need to take anti-rejection drugs after implantation of a tissue valve.

    Good Luck

Totally disagree. I'm a "newbie" and feel that I've received excellent objective advice since joining, that helped me make a fact based decision with no regrets. Good luck to you.

Mechanical vs Tissue - need help deciding

Is that true? I've not seen the studies. Logically I would think the opposite whereby tissue becoming infected before a pure carbon surface getting infected. Anyone have the data? Just curious.

ELIQUIS trial for On-X valve patients

Agreed. They contacted me as well, a few months back. I declined. I see no benefit and only downside to participating. To me, this is only profit motivated and to try and replace warfarin at 500x the cost. The long list of possible side effects of Eliquis is very scary. No thanks!

Mechanical vs Tissue - need help deciding

Agree with everything except last sentence. Valve choice (in my opinion) should consider expected/projected lifespan. Sure, if you plan to die by 75 then yeah go with tissue in your example. But, if you plan to live until 90 or 95, you certainly do not want to look forward to re-surgery again...

Cool, but I imagine much more difficult with much greater risk of injury too. No thanks!

    Buying a Ski Helmet!!

I usually try to make it out to Colorado annually to ski in Telluride and visit my sister out there. Highly recommended ski resort that never has lines nor crowds. Good place to reacquaint yourself with skiing. Start with the "See Forever" run. The locals there call Crested Butte "Crusty Butt"...

    Buying a Ski Helmet!!

Good idea! Everyone wears helmets now as compared to years ago when it was rare to see helmets on the slopes. They are very comfortable by keeping you warm and minimize wind noise. Are you a member of Costco? The stores carry helmets, gloves, and goggles on a seasonal basis depending upon where...
