Not a hug milestone compared to others, but today is 3 years

    # years ago at Cleveland Clinic Dr. Unai replaced my aortic valve and aortic aneurysm. I had a smooth recovery and been great ever since. Now if only the rest of my 61 year old body were in as good shape ;)

    Discontinuing Metoprolol Update

I had no side effects of Metoprolol other than when I worked out my heart rate was artificially suppressed. I finally ended it and went back to Losartan. You are supposed to be weaned off Metoprolol , but I was on the smallest does and just went cold turkey, no issues for me, but consult your...

Actually my old Carido was pushing me more for surgery and every time I went to surgeon he said not yet.

INR of 1.0 with mechanical valve

I am surprised the hospital discharged you. I was ready to go home after 4 days, but they kept me 3 more days until my INR was 2.0 or higher and then I had to go to cardio the first chance I got when I got home.

My insurance company had no waiting period for home monitoring.

7 year old bioprosthetic aortic valve - clot

The J&J vaccine is the only one remotely linked to clots. It is also possible you have asymptomatic covid at one point that caused a clot, I believe that was a rare side effect of covid.

    starting home INR monitoring questions

I have found over last 3 years I went from 6.75 every day to 7.5 and not looking like 8mg as I keep bumping along at 2-2.1 on 8 4 x a week and 7.5 3x a week.

    starting home INR monitoring questions

It took me a good month or 2 to get to a “stable” inr and dose. It will not be j usual for you to fluctuate a bit as well. I am not sure what valve or in what position you have it in or you have or what range your cardio suggested you stay within. I have an On-X in my aortic position and take a...

    starting home INR monitoring questions

I use a spreadsheet and the Coag Sense tester. The Coag Sense tester keeps like 1000 reading in its memory along with date/time. It is also WiFi capable so it can get updates as needed. I am coming up on 3 years of doing mine and the spreadsheet helps with trends. https://coag-sense.com/ If...

    Pig heart transplant

I suspect we are a decade away from tis being viable for most cases. The patient was not eligible for a human transplant and was out of time. Just like the early days of artificial hearts and human transplants this was a "better than the alternative" and FDA granted emergency use permission. It...

New Here - Are Beta Blockers necessary?

After surgery I think beta blockers are the norm as the heart recovers to prevent any stress on the heart, which is why I stayed on them for some time.

New Here - Are Beta Blockers necessary?

With an enlarged aorta keeping your pressure under control is vital. IMO and YMMV the key differences are “Beta blockers work by blocking the effects of the hormone epinephrine, also known as adrenaline.” Thus the sudden jolt to raise your heart rate and thus pressure. Other BP meds work...

After your surgery, what are some of the things that you found out that surprised you

The Operating theater in Cleveland was nothing more than a room, maybe 20x20 if even that. Nothing fancy, just a room.

After your surgery, what are some of the things that you found out that surprised you

They would not give me a tranquilizer until I was in the OR and on the IV and at that point it would be useless, so I opted to skip it. It was a bit terrifying to get wheeled in and see the heart/lung machine and all the people and a tray with dozens of tools. It was not long before they had me...

    Cipro antibiotic while on Warfarin

One of the greatest comedy routines of all time, love it every time I see it!

ELIQUIS trial for On-X valve patients

As others have said, get a second opinion. I would think warfarin and maybe metropol for a-fib. All the Eliquis does is prevent the a-fib from clotting it is not controlling the a-fib.

ELIQUIS trial for On-X valve patients

I don't care what mathematician or scientists say, 471 is a horrible sampling size and just as bad as the 1000 they used for the 1.5-2.0 INR recommendation. There are thousands and thousands of AVRs out there, and to me 471 or 1000 is not a decent representation. I think the purpose is that it...

    Aortic Valve Choices

That is what they said, my guess is was some time after original to make sure the patient wanted to go through it again. Personally it could be a myth. I went mechanical to be 1 and done.

    Aortic Valve Choices

It should get better as your body just filters it out. I do know when I was recovering and mentioend the lciking one DR said they had to reoperate on a patient that just could take the clicking. I had my aorta replaced with dacron as well, and I heard it a lot in the first few weeks, then I...
