    Staying the Course -- 04/29/19

Well today didn’t go to plan. Was intending to do my usual weight training but postponed it till tomorrow. I went for a blood test this morning after fasting overnight and like usual looked at the blood being drawn from my arm. Despite never being effected by this and seeing blood etc in the...

Aortic aneurysm (watchful waiting) weight / resistance training

Hi @AZ Don, thanks for the welcome. I did read your post / links thanks but thought it might be worth starting a thread specific to resistance training for those of us in the waiting room. It’s frustrating as a tall, thin person especially as age progresses and muscle / strength is harder to...

Questions re: progression of ascending aortic aneurysm

Most of my knowledge has come from personal research. I’m certainly no expert in such things. No one really knows from what I’ve read. Probably not. However the risk seems to be higher if there’s straining involved / one holds their breath / it’s a longer count “static” hold. Essentially...

Questions re: progression of ascending aortic aneurysm

Hi @ @pellicle, do you have any information sources on this please? In the case of aneurysms I’ve often seen it mentioned that those affected should avoid raising their heart rate to higher levels which I thought would be the case with spin cycling? However this article I think is quite...

Questions re: progression of ascending aortic aneurysm

Planks and pushups may potentially be worse than sensible weight training (as opposed to heavy “lifting”). There’s often an isometric component to planks and a tendency to hold one’s breath both of which are a concern. Slow reps / static holds raise blood pressure a lot more than moderate...

Know the feeling and if it’s there the glutton in me will try to demolish the lot in one go. Only way I can beat this one is to not have any in the house. That said I’ve cleaned up the diet, especially alcohol consumption, having lost around 8 pounds in the last month.

So sorry to hear about the challenges you are facing. Immune levels but much more so recovery time seem to be reduced with age in my case. I’m one of those too that suffer the consequences from overdoing things. Although most of my overdoing is mental, too much of a thinker / worrier! That...

Resistance bands arrived today. Very impressed, sturdy, well designed and excellent quality. Worth paying a little extra for excellent quality compared to much of the other cheap, less safe knock offs out there. The patented anti snap design of the tubing is a great safety feature...

Swimming with aortic aneurysm / heart issues - Safe water temperature?

Do you at some point in the colder months wear a wetsuit?

Swimming with aortic aneurysm / heart issues - Safe water temperature?

Thanks for that. I’ve come to that conclusion now. Research can be useful but some of the information out there would have those of us with valve / aneurysm issues living a very restricted lifestyle if we were to believe it. It has that effect on me when water is above 33C which our pool can...

Many think of resistance bands as something that are good for toning but don’t build serious muscle. That’s a fallacy. If one wants they could build decent muscle. A quick search of the web will provide many examples. In my case having the aneurysm, with the bands as is the case with...

Also sorry to hear that SB. I’m sure all will work out well. Had a small op unrelated to the heart early in the week and itching to get back into exercise in a couple of days time. To add some variety to resistance training whilst trying to stay safe both aneurysm and joint wise I’ve...

    It Just Got Real

I thought that in the case of Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s recent valve replacement (Mar 2018) they were intending to do the minimally invasive procedure but once on the table they weren’t able to so it ended up as OHS. You’d think he would have had the choice of the best surgeons out there? It...

    Tissue Regrets??

Such powerful words. See this happen so often where the health issue that worries us the most is often not the thing that ends up killing us.

At nearly 60 and having the aneurysm in some ways being forced to find safer ways to train, especially with resistance training, is not all bad news. My joints are very thankful. I used to hate anything over 8 reps but now really enjoy 20 - 25. Cardio is also much more enjoyable at a low to...

Swimming with aortic aneurysm / heart issues - Safe water temperature?

See above. Seems like a very sensible approach. From further reading cold water shock is simply a flight/ flight response. Everyone’s reaction will be different and like all stress one can within limits condition themselves to this through gradual exposure. Strategies I’ve seen in addition...
