    My father's Lp(a)

Interesting article, and I am aware of the growing significance of plaque density as well as density in CAC scores. Unfortunately, high Lp(a) is associated with less dense, more dangerous plaques, and with plaques whose necrotic cores continue to grow even while on statin therapy...

    My father's Lp(a)

Oh, by the way Agian -- you were right about my father. His test used ng/ml. This is bad news for him and my kids -- at 77 ng/ml, he is well above the "extremely high risk" cutoff of 60 ng/ml. Thank you for reminding me to be more guarded about my optimism in these matters.

    My father's Lp(a)

You remember wrong. 390 nmol/L converts to a titch over 150 ng/ml, although the conversion is messy. But why bother converting? The range is already set for nmol/L, which is considered the more accurate measure anyway. On the scale of nmol/L, 75 or over is considered "high risk", and 125 or...

    My father's Lp(a)

It was certainly not included in your standard lipid screen. You have to ask for it specifically. You have to understand that knowledge of the importance and treatment of this blood factor is still in its infancy, and a lot of docs (as well as their professional organizations) have this...

    My father's Lp(a)

Good news for my dad and kids (though less so if you are right in your assertion that his test measured in ng/dl). In fact, the online doc I have set an appointment with -- who does this for a living -- told me that he has seen TWO people over the course of his career who were able to cut their...

    My father's Lp(a)

Agian -- sorry if I came across as a little salty up there. I mean I AM a bit salty on this topic, but not entirely with YOU, specifically. I fear I've directed vitriol at you that is meant for the situation, and for that I apologize. I am not trying to "freak" my father out, I am trying to...

    My father's Lp(a)

OK, I'll bite. Why does it seem that they used different units? If they are, that is a BAD thing, for him and my kids. Why are you so sure? He told me that on the scale his test used, a 30 was considered normal. That is NOT the case with ng/dl, but it IS the case with nmol/L, which is what...

    My father's Lp(a)

So I finally got the kids' blood work done and am waiting in the results. Meanwhile, my father, who got HIS Lp(a) checked weeks ago, finally heard from HIS doctor what the results were. Now there are two main alleles that seem to control Lp(a), at least in Caucasians. We know that I have two...

Surgeon says second valve replacement will be full sternotomy! Yuck!

I'm sorry, tigerlily. That sounds awful. I guess one positive thing to look at is that the surgeon said you're unlikely to need a third OHS since TAVR will be an option for you in the future.

How wonderful and inspirational. Thank you, and best of luck for the future!

    Agian

That's roughly twice what I pay for child support (for my son who lives with me -- don't ask). For a drug that still won't get me out of the "extremely high risk" range. Huh. Modern medicine, eh?

    Agian

I found a telemedicine doc who seems to know his stuff about Lp(a) and actual preventative medicine. After I told him my story, he told me I was a very unusual case and he offered to treat me essentially for free, although he expressed some doubt that he could bring my Lp(a) levels down...

    Agian

Read a lot of Doctor Davis in the past, he's the guy who switched from "reverse your CAC score" stuff to "don't eat grains", right? I remember he talked about using aged garlic extract to halt or reverse aortic stenosis progression. He talks a good talk, I'll give him that. The way you were...

    Agian

Agian, I tried to PM you but apparently your inbox is full. What country do you live in, where Lp(a) and its treatment are taken so much more seriously than here in the USA?

    Warfarin and Cheese

    Does K2 even affect warfarin?

Huh. Where are all of these people today?

Supplements to take while on warfarin

Vitamin K2, if it doesn't interfere with warfarin and if warfarin doesn't interfere with it. I am never sure. In any event, it might help slow down the arterial calcification that warfarin seems to cause. Oh, and Kyolic aged garlic extract might be worth looking into, for the same reason.

A Heart Valve that Heals itself

Interesting, but too much rehashed TAVR explanation and not enough explanation of how and why this valve would repair itself.

    Warfarin and Cheese

We all know that Warfarin and vitamin K don't play together well. You have to watch your greens intake when you're taking Warfarin. But what about cheese? Cheese has a lot of vitamin K2. Do you have to watch your cheese intake while on Warfarin, or does K2 not affect the drug's performance?

    Feeling a bit overwhelmed today

I'll offer the cheer I can -- if she is having her AVR at 66, it should not affect her overall lifespan. That is something to take heart in.
