50 year old caged Valve Starr-Edwards

We report a unique case of a caged-ball Starr-Edwards prosthesis (model 6310, cloth covered) implanted in the mitral position by Christian Barnard that was successfully explanted and replaced after 50 years, the longest period free from valve dysfunction ever reported. Caged-Ball Valve

    9th year on St Jude

The 16th was my 9th anniversary of a mitral valve replacement with a St Jude. I still sport a sternotic bicuspid aortic valve that may be a candidate for intervention at some point but so far it is "wait and see" I was unlucky to have had rheumatic fever as a kid and that damaged my valves but...

Change in Echocardiogram Guidelines for Mechanical Valves

Unfortunately some of us will have to continue the annual echos. Though I had a mitral replacement, my aortic has stenosis too thanks rheumatic heart disease and maybe a candidate for replacement at some point.

    Foods on warfarin

Don't schedule your meals. Enjoy your meals and when you test adjust your dosage. It is that simple. If you are around 3.0 INR and test weekly or biweekly you will have to binge on greens seriously to bring that number down into danger zone. Remember when we go for procedures, we stop...

    Foods on warfarin

Uhm peas do not count in Vitamin K. It's not green food it is dark leafy greens - Kale, Spinach and Collard Greens and cooked too. Our bodies cannot do a lot with uncooked greens. I cup of cooked kale is like 20 cups of peas and it's easy to eat 2 cups of kale but 5 cups of peas...if you love...

    My mvr story so far.

Why don't you search "Americans skipping on healthcare" and have your fill of sources you would find acceptable? I work in one of the largest academic health systems and I have had my fill of these issues. If it really bothers you because you care about health access or it bothers you because...

    My mvr story so far.

The doctor is right. If you say you walk 6 to 7 miles you are fit. He can see the valve in the echo and he can read the radiologists review. Heart surgery is not an elective procedure. Your natural poor valve is still better than a new artificial prosthesis. 1. You are asymptomatic. If you...

Mechanical vs Tissue - need help deciding

Heart surgery is $200‐300k having it twice in your lifetime because of clicking and some dirt cheap rat poison? I have seen folks drive convertibles top down with AC on blast. I think it's crazy they say why not.

Mechanical vs Tissue - need help deciding

False argument. Almost all mechanical valvers will have zero valve replacements in 10 years. They may have a heart surgery because of other issues but not valve failure. Operating word ALMOST. On the other hand, MOST under 50 with tissue valves will have surgery again and after second surgery...

After your surgery, what are some of the things that you found out that surprised you

This is what makes the human mind so amazing. Imagine that you were able to separate reality from nightmares...there are those that live in the nightmare and cannot escape it. How about waking up to find your hands restrained?

    My mvr story so far.

This is the US vs UK model problem. US has its 200k patients awaiting heart surgery but they are not on the radar because they dare not go to the doctor. They therefore do not exist. There is no wait time. All you have to do is dig cases of diabetes and ask yourself why something very...

Hello! Just had Mitral Valve Repair

Wait minimally invasive repair and you stayed 4 nights in the hospital. I had my chest cranked open and I stayed 4/5 nights in the hospital before discharge. Yes I had a couple of months of no lifting more than 10lbs but ...

    Warfarin is very tweaky

You know when we talk of Vitamin K rich foods...salads, asparagus, sprouts and broccoli are light to middle weights. You can eat those as many times as part of your meal regularly. I am waiting for someone to say I ate 2 bowls of asparagus. Green leafy veggies is where it is at. A serving is...

A question was posed about INR measurements

This would be a terrible idea. Then I can't "doctor" my results. I need to manage my INR managers.

    Valve anniversary soon

It's also fair to say you have become hard of hearing at 80 from all the swing jazz then rock and roll to disco and now hip hop. The valve didn't go quiet. Hearing said I am outta here.:ROFLMAO::LOL::ROFLMAO::LOL::ROFLMAO:

    Discontinuing Metoprolol Update

What is reducing meds is a good thing? I have tried to taper of my Metoprolol and I find that I develop irregular heart rhythms so I am all for keeping my 50mg twice a day

Looking for a community of fellow artificial valve folks

Well I heard that a bovine valve, bone or not, can be layered with pork fat and give it the character of a porcine valve. I was wondering why On-x don't do that to their valves to give them almost a tissue valve cover. You wouldn't need Warfarin just two baby aspirins a day and you are good.

    Life expectancy with or without

I think I am reading a suicide attempt. If you think stopping warfarin is the easier way to go, you have another thing coming. You are risking a stroke more than anything else.
