Many UK / NHS members? Today's routine check up wasn't routine!

In my case I have had two TEEs based on concerning findings on my regular echo - both times, the TEE showed the valve to be in better condition than the regular echo indicated, and they put me back on 6 month and then annual monitoring. The TEE served a dual purpose - confirm / deny the echo...

    TEE and anticoagulants information please

I’d ask the doc about that one.

Recently told I need valve replacement but may not be able to take warfarin

Hey Zara, someone just posted that their wife gave birth with a mech valve - maybe you can pm them? I will try to find that thread since it’s recent. I gave birth with a stenotic native mitral valve (did not know I had it prior) and that was extremely sketchy, bad option. I would agree to...

4.5 years after Mitral valve replacement, 34 age

I am glad your wife is doing well! That is great she was able to have a baby. People sometimes post on here looking for advice on what valve to choose, can they manage a pregnancy with a mechanical valve, so I am sure that will be encouraging for others to hear.

    Questions on Selecting a Surgeon

A cardiologist did my repair not a surgeon. And yes as others mentioned he has several published and often cited journal publications. Not that I knew that at the time. I was just lucky.

    Questions on Selecting a Surgeon

Def look for a mitral specialist / hospital that does high volume of mitral repairs specifically. It’s great to keep your native valve and lots of mitral valves can be durably repaired. I had mine done at the heart hospital near my home in Minneapolis.

    Marijuana and Blood Thinners/Mechanical Valve

It seems like overall impact on your cardiovascular system and is more the issue than warfarin specifically. Doesn’t seem like a great choice for someone who already has heart issues...

Just to bring all up to speed

Walking is great for sure - hang in there! Hope the neuropathy settles down. That’s no fun at all.

    Scared and full of anxiety

Welcome to the forum, and sorry to hear about the panic attacks, and what you have had to go through with losing your father. But, if you have gotten through that, and stopped using THC, and mostly kept fit, you have built inner strength to help address this valve thing too. Do you have...

Saying hi - 41 year old with BAV and surgery "soon"

They really can work miracles with this valve stuff -- my two youngest kids and I would all be dead without modern medicine, and instead I've seen them grow into wonderful young adults, not to mention getting to see the older three grow up. I am so grateful. Best of luck and all my wishes for...

Newly Diagnosed with MVP with severe regurgitation

I did get a mitral stenosis repair - not only that, it was non surgical using a balloon thru a leg vein. I think it’s pretty standard for pure mitral stenosis. It’s a bit of a brute force tactic so expected to worsen regurgitation by a degree which is what happened to me. It’s not good if...

Newly Diagnosed with MVP with severe regurgitation

Are you thinking of changing insurance during open enrollment (maybe buying on the exchanges?) and having surgery in 2024? Trying to decide what employer-offered plan to pick right now (if applicable, not sure how big a company you work for, self-employed, or what). Hopefully someone here or...

Newly Diagnosed with MVP with severe regurgitation

Just wanted to say hi and I hope you find a good care team in your area. I had mitral stenosis that was repaired via a valvuloplasty in 2002. It gave me moderate to mod-severe regurgitation but great trade off in terms of functioning. Hope you get great results whatever route you go.

Please help me figure how “normal 83” feels?

I think you described your experience well and I’d give your doc the experience you shared here. At 83 you’re not really talking about what’s best for your heart in the long term and your longevity (as factors in strongly for asymptomatic younger people) but the kind of life you want to live now...

Mitral Stenosis patients: has anyone gone through pregnancy before surgery?

I found this paper and thought I’d add it to the thread, as it runs down several valve and other heart issues and the degree of pregnancy risk. Looks like severe mitral stenosis is in the worst (aka Contradicted) category, I would agree with that contraindication assessment. But moderate mitral...

    Flying with severe aortic stenosis

Symptomatic changes everything so give your docs the info they need, I would send a medical message.

    PVL Closure

Having had a thru the vein valve repair (valvuloplasty not mitraclip) the decision making process was would it be safe to try it before proceeding to ohs if needed. We decided yes and that repair has lasted 21 years so far. Still have native valve and no ohs which I feel very lucky that the...

    Flying with severe aortic stenosis

So …. Since you’re symptomatic, when is your surgery scheduled? Short of breath lying down is symptomatic for sure.
