Never ending coughing, when will it stop?

My DH is now 4 weeks post op and is able to walk nearly a mile a day but he has a dry cough since before the surgery and it has worsened in the last couple of weeks. Now he starts to gag and get dry heaves. It makes talking and breathing deeply difficult because that sets off another coughing...

New here, AVReplacement & poss ascending aorta replacement sched Oct 3. (2012)

Time flies (or drags) when you're worried, huh? Try to line up some friends and neighbors to help with getting you meals, feeding the dogs, driving you to appointments and such. I've begun to realize that most folks really do want to help out and they get a lot of pleasure from being able to...

    today's the day

The swelling was less this morning and he'd lost 2 pounds - so that's good. He has a daily chart for BP, pulse rate, weight and exercise (minutes walked) - that's really good to be able to see progress.

    today's the day

DH is improving a little bit every day! Walking now 9 minutes 2 times/day - gets kind of light headed the last minute or so, but rests and breathes and makes it back to his best friend, the recliner. He starts the night in bed but gets up a couple of hours later to go to the recliner because...

    today's the day

He was in ICU for 5 nights and then in step down for 2. They day before he was going to be discharged he went into fibrillation and rapid heart rate. After 3 IVs of lopressor he was stable again and he was able to come home on Thursday. Now that he is only taking tylenol or motrin for pain he...

    Husband's 8 day post op

Hi all - my husband had both the MV replace and Bentall procedure to replace bicuspid AV and fix the aortic dilation (porcine) on Sep 12. The surgery was 10 1/2 -11 hours long - he had some coagulopathy stuff going on for awhile. They kept him on the ventilator and sedated until the following...

    today's the day

Whew - 10 1/2 hour surgery. Took a good while for him to coagulate enough to get him stabilized and into ICU - we are not sure about whether that was before or after they closed him up - doctor said one thing and the nurse another. Doctor wants to keep him sedated and intubated until sometime...

    today's the day

We both had a good nights sleep and now we are heading off to the hospital. DH is the first on the day's docket. Dr told us last night that he would probably not arouse him until tomorrow morning due to the extent of the surgery. One of our daughters and her husband will be keeping me company...

    Surgery Decision FINALLY made!

Hi TomG - my husband is having his surgery on 12 Sep and is having both mitral and aortic valves replaced. He seems to be holding on pretty well - maybe he doesn't want to worry me? Like you, it just feels good to have made some decisions and set a date. I seem to feel even less anxious once we...

    My AVR surgery Sept 14th

Richard you will find lots of support here. Great group to be part of! This may be time to ask friends to help out - most people really want to serve one another but don't know what to do. If you need rides or food, let someone know. Giving and receiving service is a blessing to all involved...

    Wednesday 9/7--6:00 am surgery

My 64 yr old husband is about a week behind you - his surgery is Sep 12 - also has never had any symptoms and is ready to get this over with. We'll be pulling for you and watching your progress. Best wishes.

    Is it really that time?

My husband has been in the waiting room for nearly 10 years with BAV and more recently MV prolapse. He has never had any symptoms at all but the doctors now say it's time for surgery and it's been scheduled for Sep 12. One doctor told us his "ideal" would be that my husband never has any...

    caffein?

Good to know. I guess he will probably continue drinking his sodas and eating chocolate covered strawberries. I want him to be happy! :)

    caffein?

I have seen a couple of folks mention that they were told no caffein for a bit before surgery. My husband's is scheduled for Sep 12 but his doctor hasn't said anything about that -as a matter of fact I had to ask him what meds he should stop taking before the surgery. Husband doesn't see the...

Thanks Eva - good to know to expect a few more restrictions post surgery. Question (if you know or remember) - how long was your surgery?

    double valve replacement

AgilityDog -Thanks for sharing your experience and words of advise. He continues to be asymptomatic (at least he always says he feels fine) so the doctor is willing to do both at the same time. We are relieved (I think) - or at least we will be soon. :)

    any others waiting?

Hi - just reaching out to see if there are some other "significant others" waiting. My husband's OHS is scheduled for Sep 12.

    double valve replacement

My husband has been in the waiting room for AVR (due to aortic aneurysm and bicuspid valve) for almost 10 years. This year they found MV regurg. and say that is the most pressing issue and he needs MVR soon. At first the surgeon wanted to only do the MVR since the AV has been stable with meds...
